In this second-year studio assignment, we were tasked with designing a three-story tiny home within the limited dimensions of 9’ by 18’—roughly the size of a parking space. The project, situated in a parking lot along the Chicago River in the South Loop, did not require compliance with ADA code but had to be highly functional. We were to create a unique client profile, and I designed for a middle-aged couple with two college-aged daughters, seeking a glamorous, compact living space in close proximity to the city’s vibrant offerings.

The first floor, which serves as the kitchen, dining, and living area, uses contrasting wall coverings and colors to differentiate the spaces, emphasizing family and guest interaction. The second floor introduces a “temporary” element with a Murphy bed that transforms into a desk and hobby space when not in use. The third floor embodies “permanence,” housing the couple's private bedroom, a space meant exclusively for them. This design skillfully integrates both temporary and permanent living elements to accommodate the couple’s dynamic lifestyle.
